Good day everyone! In my previous post, I shared about the
ultimate guide to home organization and for me that is the Marie Kondo’s way of
organizing. In today’s post, I will share with you how I apply it in my own
life.
First I started with clothes. As suggested by the Konmari Method, I bring out all my clothes and sort them between things that sparks joy and the ones that will be discarded. The challenge for me is that I have a lot of nice dresses that I like so much but wont fit me anymore. I gave birth last year and as a result of my pregnancy, I gain weight; and until now I'm not back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I'm still keeping those clothes is because I hope that one day I will lose weight and will be able to wear them again. But when I decided to organize my stuffs, I realize that these clothes are not bringing me joy. Although they are in good condition every time I saw my closet, it brings guilt about my current weight. It reminds me that I’m now bigger and that I am way behind my previous weight. It also frustrates me every time I dress up seeing so many clothes and finding nothing that fits me. Deep inside it affects my self-image. So finally, I let go of my clothes. To make it a little bit inspiring, instead of selling my clothes to strangers, the ones that are still in good condition, I gave to my close friends and family. The rest, I gave away to fund raising campaigns in church. Now, I have fewer clothes but quality and well fitting clothes. Choosing what to wear is a breeze and organizing is easy. Definitely, I will still work out on my weight issue, but for now, I need to have clothes that fits me. When I’m able to reach my weight goals, then I have the reason to treat myself into shopping spree!
On the side note, I purchased wooden hangers to organize my closet and it makes it sooo pleasing to the eye. I purchased mine through instagram, you can check the store here.
Next is my makeup. I have passion for makeup and hairstyle that's why I have
quite a collection (but not as much as the beauty guru). I sorted them out
and select those that sparks joy. I realized I have a lot of makeup
that doesn’t suits my skintone. The reason is that I purchased online and was not
able to test before buying. I telly myself I will use it up anyway. But to be honest, who's willing to wear a makeup
that doesn’t matched your skintone? So I started giving away or throwing
away makeup that doesn’t look good in me. I ended up having few pieces. This purge was great! When I look
at my makeup drawer, I love everything I see. In fact, I find myself using my
makeup more often because, it’s easy to find what I need and I like everything
that was there. I guess I will keep my collection this way.
Now with the books, this comes so easy because I don’t have
a lot. What I discarded most are seminar manuals and handouts. One thing I
learn about Konmari Method, you are not supposed to keep seminar manuals
because the very thing about the seminar is that you have to learn right at the moment and apply the learning thereafter. How many times we keep the seminar manual and
never look at it again? If we rely on the manual to remind us about the
seminar, then the seminar itself failed its purpose. Seminars are supposed to
be experienced and applied then after.
As for the mementos/photos, this is what I’ve done. During the
process of tidying, I collected loose photos, unfinished scrapbook and love
letters and mementos. Marie Kondo suggested that if that memento really sparks
joy then you should be able to put them on an album so that in the future when
you want to look back on it, everything was well kept (not some dusty old
photos). Having this in mind, I was inspired to finished scrapbooking and
putting photos in photo album in just one day. For some mementos, I just have
to throw them away (like movie tickets, flight tickets) I don’t think I will be
happy seeing them in the future. What I kept are photos, love letter from my
husband, and letters we receive on our wedding. The rest, I just have to let go. I don’t need
to keep movie tickets, or flight tickets. The
photos is a better representation of it.
This are some up the highlights of my Tidying Experience
using the Konmari method. I’m loving the results and I plan to maintain
this kind of lifestyle. How about you? Have you tried Konmari method of tidying
up? Let me know your experience in the comment below. If you blog about it,
please leave your blog post link so I can read it as well.
